The honest guide to buying a used mobile.
Buying pre-owned mobiles in India saves real money โ but only if you know what to check. Hidden defects, poor battery, duplicate parts, no-return sellers. We'll walk you through all of it.
The one rule that saves everyone. If the seller doesn't clearly mention return policy + warranty, skip it. Doesn't matter how good the price looks.
India's used-mobile market moves about โน22,000 crore a year. Cashify alone processes over 60 lakh transactions annually; OLX has hundreds of thousands of phone listings live at any moment. Most of those transactions go through cleanly โ but a meaningful fraction end in disputes, "battery health mysteriously dropped after purchase" stories, or straight-up scams.
This page is our category-level guide for used mobiles specifically. If you want the umbrella flow that covers phones, laptops, and desktops together, read the complete buying guide โ the 15-point universal checklist there applies here too. This page adds the mobile-specific gotchas: IMEI verification, iPhone-only issues (Face ID, True Tone, activation lock), Android FRP, battery health thresholds, and which price bands are worth which risk level.
Also useful alongside this: our valuation calculator for a fair-price estimate, the FAQ for quick answers to specific questions, and the glossary for jargon like IMEI, FRP, True Tone, and battery cycle count.

Used phones are not bad โ buying without checking is what's risky. Twelve things you must verify before paying.
- IMEI numberMatch with box or invoice if available.
- Return optionEven 3โ7 days is a huge safety net.
- Warranty infoPlatform warranty beats seller promises.
- Display testTouch, dead pixels, brightness.
- Battery health / backupEspecially for iPhones.
- Speaker & micBoth ends, both directions.
- Camera testFocus, shake, clarity.
- Charging testFast charging if supported.
- Heating test10 minutes of camera + YouTube.
- Network testSIM, data, Wi-Fi.
- Physical damageCorners, frame bends, back panel.
- Reset checkNo iCloud or Google lock.
Phone lete time 5-minute test karo. Baad me problem nikli to loss tumhara. Non-negotiable.
Buying a used iPhone.
iPhones hold value better than any other used mobile in India โ but they also have the most category-specific ways to go wrong. Five things that only matter for iPhones.
- Verify no activation lockSettings โ Apple ID โ attempt sign-out. Should work with the seller's password. If it doesn't, the phone will brick after your factory reset. Also cross-check on checkcoverage.apple.com.
- Test True ToneSettings โ Display โ True Tone toggle. Missing toggle = display has been replaced with non-Apple panel. Not fatal, but resale value drops โน3-8k and colors may look different.
- Test Face ID enrollmentDelete existing Face ID and enroll a new face on the spot. Broken Face ID module can't be swapped without breaking pairing โ repair is a โน15-25k job at Apple.
- Check battery healthSettings โ Battery โ Battery Health. 85%+ is great, 80-85% acceptable at price discount, below 80% means budget โน3,500 for a battery swap within 6-12 months.
- Look for "Genuine Apple Part" indicatorsSettings โ General โ About should show genuine display, battery, camera. Third-party parts are flagged. Not a dealbreaker, but factors into price.

Buying a used Android.
Android is a broader category โ a used Samsung Galaxy S22 and a used Xiaomi Redmi Note 10 are almost different products. Some things stay universal.
- Verify FRP (Factory Reset Protection) is disabledAsk the seller to factory-reset the device in front of you and sign out of their Google account. Otherwise you can't set it up as a new device.
- Check bootloader statusSettings โ About โ Status. A device with an unlocked bootloader or custom ROM installed will show "Custom" or fail SafetyNet checks. Banking apps and Google Pay may refuse to work.
- Confirm original ROMOEM ROM only (One UI for Samsung, MIUI for Xiaomi, ColorOS for Oppo/OnePlus). Custom ROMs indicate previous tinkering โ walk away unless you know what you're doing.
- Test the fingerprint sensorAll 5 finger slots. In-display sensors on cheaper phones fail often after 2-3 years.
- Check the update timelineManufacturer's support end date matters. Samsung Galaxy S-series and Google Pixel get 5-7 years of updates. Budget Redmi/Realme may already be on their last update. Ask before you buy.
- Verify original charger and cableFast charging on Android depends heavily on the original charger. A โน149 replacement won't deliver 65W charging. If not included, budget โน1,500-2,500 for a proper replacement.
Cashify, OLX, or a local shop โ which one?
Same phone, three channels, three different risk-price trade-offs.
Cashify / Yaantra / 2GUD
Best for first-time buyers. 10-15% more expensive than OLX, but includes 6-12 month warranty, 7-day return, verified IMEI, tested battery. If you don't know what to check, this is where I tell every friend to start.
OLX / Quikr / Facebook Marketplace
Best price if you know the drill. No warranty, no return. Physical inspection mandatory. Use our 15-point checklist and never pay before inspection. Great for buyers on their 3rd+ used phone.
Local mobile shops
Wildcard. A good shop in Gaffar Market Delhi or Ritchie Street Chennai can match OLX prices and offer 15-30 day warranty. A bad shop is worse than both. Ask around โ every city has 2-3 with real reputation. Skip the rest.

Used vs refurbished โ what's better?
The two terms get used interchangeably. They're not the same. Here's how they actually differ.
Used phone
- Typically sold as-is
- May or may not have repairs
- Condition depends heavily on previous user
- Rarely has a return option
Refurbished phone
- Cleaned and tested
- May have replaced parts
- Usually comes with some warranty
- Often has a proper return policy
First-time buyer? Refurbished options with a return policy are almost always safer.
Common scams and mistakes.
In the used mobile market, most losses happen because of these five mistakes. All avoidable.
- Buying without checking IMEIBlacklisted phones look identical to legitimate ones.
- Ignoring battery health80% today is 60% in six months.
- Trusting "A+ grade"Without a photo checklist, the label is meaningless.
- No-return to save โน500You save โน500 and lose โน10,000. Bad trade.
- Low prices from unknown sellersIf the price is too good, something is wrong.
Common questions.
Is it safe to buy a used mobile in India?
Yes โ if you buy smartly. Always check IMEI, device condition, battery, and return policy.
Is a used phone or a refurbished phone better?
If you want more safety, refurbished with a return option is generally better for first-time buyers.
What return policy is acceptable?
Minimum 3โ7 days is good. No return is risky unless you can test physically before paying.
How do I check if a phone is original?
Check IMEI, verify software, inspect display and camera, confirm no iCloud or Google lock.
Is buying a used iPhone safe?
Yes โ if you verify no activation lock (sign out of Apple ID must work), battery health above 80%, Face ID enrolls cleanly, and True Tone toggle is present. See the iPhone-specific checklist above.
How do I check if a used mobile is stolen?
Dial *#06# to get the IMEI, then check it against the government's CEIR portal. Blacklisted phones show up there. Also check on Apple's coverage page for iPhones, or Samsung's warranty check for Samsung. We wrote a detailed guide: how to check IMEI blacklist.
What battery health should I insist on?
85% or higher is comfortable. 80-85% is acceptable if the price reflects it. Below 80%, you'll need a battery replacement within 6-12 months โ factor that โน2,500-4,500 cost into your offer.
Is a refurbished mobile the same as a second-hand one?
No. Second-hand is sold as-is by a previous owner. Refurbished means inspected, cleaned, tested, and (if needed) had parts replaced by a certified process, then sold with warranty. Full breakdown: refurbished vs second-hand.
How do I spot a duplicate display in a used phone?
Look for missing True Tone (iPhones), color inconsistency at the edges, poor touch response on corners, missing genuine-part indicator in system settings. Our full guide: how to identify duplicate display.
Which brands hold value best in the used market?
Apple (any model, especially Pro variants), Samsung Galaxy S-series, OnePlus flagships, and Google Pixel (though niche in India). Xiaomi, Realme, and Oppo depreciate faster โ you save more buying used, but resale later is weaker.
