MacBook Air / Pro (M1, M2, M3)
Best passive investment. Apple Silicon MacBooks depreciate slower than any other laptop. A used M1 Air at 25-30% off new is a phenomenal deal — soldered SSD means nothing was swapped, battery life is exceptional, silent operation. Skip Intel-era MacBooks (pre-2020).
Dell Latitude / HP EliteBook
Middle ground. Business-class Dells and HPs are almost as durable as ThinkPads and 10-15% cheaper. Avoid Inspiron and consumer-grade Pavilion — those are built to different (lower) standards.
Consumer / gaming brands
Higher risk. Acer Nitro, ASUS TUF, MSI, Alienware — all run hot and age fast. Batteries degrade quickly, thermal paste dries out, fans get loud. Only buy under 3 years old, and only after a full thermal test.

How do I know if the SSD is real, not fake?
Run CrystalDiskInfo or the built-in Windows storage-health tool. Real SSDs report a brand and model (Samsung, Crucial, Kingston, WD, etc.). Fake or unbranded storage often shows generic identifiers or fails SMART checks. If the seller can't run this test on the spot, treat that as an answer.
What if the Windows install is cracked?
Don't buy. A genuine Windows 10 or 11 license is worth ₹8,000-12,000 alone. A cracked install is unstable, unpatched, and eventually locks itself. Insist on genuine activation before payment; the seller should be able to show "Windows is activated" in Settings.
